HOMOSEXUAL: An Ambiguous Word

What is a homosexual?
a) one who is attracted to his own gender but does not engage in homosexual activity;
b) one who is attracted to his own gender AND engages in homosexual activity;
c) both a. and b.;
d) one who engages in homosexual activity but is not attracted to his own gender.

Response d. is incorrect.  Engaging in homosexual activity does not mean a person is attracted to his own gender (ie: homosexual), any more than were a homosexual to mechanically have sex with women would make him heterosexual.  Since he has no desire for women, although having sex with them, he is still homosexual.  It is no different than one who masturbates but is not attracted to his hand.  In the same vein, the fact that someone is attracted to his own gender does not mean he necessarily has intercourse with his own gender. And so, the vagueness of these terms are revealed.  The word homosexuality and 'gay' lend themselves to the deception of political agenda and to misleading over-simplicity in religious discourse.  It is therefore necessary to be extra clear when using these words, to specify exactly what you mean by the using the word.

There is no statement in the Torah (the Law of God) stating that it is a sin for a man to be attracted to another man, or for a woman to be attracted to another woman.  The ONLY homosexual action mentioned in the text of the Law of God is that "a man shall not lie with a man, the layings of a woman."

The term 'layings' is a Hebrew idiom for intercourse, and this is how the verse was understood thousands of years ago in the Talmudic literature.  Neither the Law of God nor the Sages of the Talmud mention the concept of homosexual attraction, much less condemned a person who experiences the attraction just because he experiences the attraction.

IT IS CRITICAL to distinguish between homosexual attraction and male homosexual intercourse.  It is possible to experience persistent homosexual attraction without engaging in male homosexual intercourse.  Similarly, it is possible that a person engages in homosexual intercourse without experiencing homosexual attraction -- as is known to happen in prisons and similar situations.

This post is only in regard to the prohibition of homosexual activity as found within the text of the Torah - the Law of God.  Whether some or all forms of affection between homosexuals that do not involve intercourse are also forbidden is a matter that requires elucidation of the Talmudic literature; Similarly, the prohibition against men marrying men and women marrying women is not found in the text of the Torah, although the Talmudic Sages deemed it included in the explicit Torah prohibition against following in the ways of Egypt.  The Sages did not ordain lashes for violation of this prohibition specifically due to the fact that it does not appear explicitly in the Biblical text.

  1. Shalom Aleichem Mikhael, how are you? I have always liked your videos. I would like to ask, do you yourself see you entering a domestic union with a Torah observant male one day? I have always seen it that if two torah observant men live together in the same home and observe the daily prayers, shabbat and high holidays and observe kosher then why would there be a problem? It is really absolutely nobody's business to assume or ask which sexual practices they do together. If they want to observe all the laws of Torah then that is their business, no?

  4. Isa 56:4 For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;

    Isa 56:5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.

    Eunuch is bible word for homosexual. If eunuch means castrated man, it will be an error because it means that G-d allow His perfect creation to be changed by man. One must believe that G‑d, the greatest artisan of all, formed him or her in the most fitting way, and one must not change this form. Changing one’s figure for beauty concerns alone is tantamount to insulting G‑d’s handiwork!

    G-d himself, stated in isaiah, there are some of us are eunuch, it means eunuch is naturally born that way as G-d created them. Again, do not try to change or transform a homosexual to be a heterosexual, cause it means you change G-d perfect creation. If you do that, it will be a sin.

    1. The explanation I've always heard for this is that the government of the time was carrying away Jewish lads and castrating them to make them serve in their palaces, like Daniel and Nehemiah, and in fact this is mentioned earlier in Isaiah (39:7).

  5. yeah. Eunuchs can be born that way (by some misfortunate foetal malformation) or can be created by vicious people who have an excessive number of wives, cannot hope to satisfy them, so they castrate little boys to guard them. Horrible.
    Also men castrated themselves as part of the worship of Cybele.
    You walk a very difficult path Yosef and I hope you're okay (since it has been so many years since your last update).

  6. Hello,
    I'd like to speak to you about something which only you could understand. Do you have any way to send private messages?
